Shot in Soho is an original exhibition which highlights Soho's diverse culture, history and community. The area of Soho is small however has a complex place of people. This exhibition shows the history of the characters and different people that once and still do live in Soho as well as the structures and contrasts of buildings. It has been the centre of music, design, fashion and a place with lots of ethnic backgrounds. From this exhibition I have gathered that soho is a free and creative place where people live and go and is amazing as it has gone unchanged for centuries.
Great start! Now, select the best images that represent Extreme Contrast and explain how they relate to this topic. |
This image shot by William Klein who is an American artist and filmmaker. He is known for his abstract photography of city scenes. This image is in the 60s and 70s and is interesting because it shows the different environments, fashion and types of relationships between people. A series of 4 men have the hands covering there faces as they walk out of a building. I assume there are cameras and maybe reporters however don't know why they don't want to be seen.

This image was taken in the famous colony club. It was a wild party scene that was invite only. Smoking and drinking was industrial with the rooms only licensed to sell alcohol until 11pm.
This images where shot at one of Soho's strip-clubs in a girls dressing room. The photographer thought theses images would sell but unfortunately this was not the case. However it shows girls, all different races getting along and laughing.

Rhode's creates an illusion here of a man jumping in order to get the ball into the chalk drawn hoop. The dark plain tones contrast nicely with the bright orange basketball, this makes the ball the main focal point of the image as it is the first thing the eye is drawn to. This image is intriguing as it plays with the brain as after looking at it for a while you can observe that the man is in fact lying on the floor along side the ball. This means that Rhode took this image from a bird's eye view. This image has a wide gap in the middle as like the image is split into one side (reality) and the other (illusion)

The nine images translate to one main image creating a story board of a man waving a flag back and fourth. To me it looks as if there is strong winds and that it is hard to control the flag. The effect of nine images creates plenty of interpretation for the viewer one of which could be the man having conflict with himself. The fact that this image only contains brown and white tones makes the image look simplistic and plain which is interesting as it makes the viewer focus more on the story as well as the images.

This image is clever as it shows a wall drawn image of just over a dozen wine glasses balanced on top of one another in the shape of a pyramid and then a real ladder and person pouring line into the top glass of the pyramid. This image is effective as in all Rhode's images the contrast between reality and fantasy is strong. The big white wall creates a successful canvas as it gives the artist a lot of space which he uses in a unique way in placing the drawn image in the centre, and the ladder and man to the left of it leaving an open area. I like the open space that covers the last third of the image as it keeps the image clear and simplistic.

The image consists of an figure drowning in a bowel of cereal spelling out the world "help" in letters made of cereal. The figure on the edge of the bowl is holding up a rubber ring in order to potentially save the drawing man. This image makes the idea seem comical and humorous although in reality is a serious problem which makes the image more effective and clever as Boffoli turns a problem into a mimic or minimalized scene.

In this image Boffoli places a toy figure on the end of a string of a tea bag, and hangs it of the edge of a lime green mug. The significance of the purple background and the purple label makes the image look plain and simplistic although the idea is not simple. The emptiness also makes the image feel clean and have a modern look. The little figure represents bravery or fear due to the fact that he is stuck and holding on or went down the string intentionally.

This image represents a deep sea diver, diving into a glass full of Champaign. The bubbles above the figure constitute for jump the figure made which makes the image feel and look more realistic and practical. The autumn colours of orange and yellow give the image a very light and bubbly feel to it. The fact that there are more the one champaign glasses makes

This image is very interesting as it is made up of multiple faint and sharp lines with contrasts tones of black and white. This image is capturing as it is down to the viewers interpretation as there is no correct answer of where or what this image consists of. To me this worms eye view creates a expressive image that makes the image seem more creative as this image is very simplisitic. The two main white beams structure the image giving the image layers and points to focus apon.

This image consist of a contrast between building size as well as colours which shows darker colours and the bottom of the image and gradually lightens to a royal blue when reached the sky. The significance of the small windows of lights on the dark buildings also contrast with one another giving the image more substance that engages the viewer. The image is clearly shot during the evening in which it is dark although a hit on lights much that one can see. Theses tones as well has blue skies present its self in a capturing way as the image has more to offer.
|
This black and white image consists of one large building that spreads and enlarges across the image creating depth that makes the building full fill the whole image. Hewitt uses symmetry to personify the urban modern feeling. The composition of this shot also makes the image look intimidating especially due to the tones of the image .The different colours of greys add a slight 'gloom' to the image as it looks perhaps quite depressing and simple, further implying the open shape at the top of the image which is the sky, which is also grey adding to the gloom of the overall image.
